SBI Debit Card Activation and PIN Generation Process

State Bank of India issues debit cards for cash withdrawals, merchant payments, online purchases and several other banking transactions. However, when you receive a new, renewed or replacement SBI debit card, you should first make sure the card is ready for use and set its four-digit ATM PIN.

SBI provides several ways to generate or reset a debit card PIN without visiting a bank branch. Customers can use an SBI ATM, SMS Green PIN facility, Internet Banking or SBI’s telephone banking service. Debit card controls can also be managed through YONO SBI and Internet Banking.

There is one important point to understand before starting. Debit card activation and PIN generation are related, but they are not exactly the same thing. Activation makes the card usable, while PIN generation creates the four-digit security number required for ATM withdrawals and PIN-based merchant transactions.

SBI states that newly issued, replacement and renewed debit cards are initially enabled for domestic ATM cash withdrawals and domestic Point of Sale transactions. Other facilities such as online transactions, international usage and contactless payments can be switched on separately when required.

What Do You Need to Activate an SBI Debit Card?

Keep the following ready before starting the process:

  • SBI debit card
  • Bank account linked with the debit card
  • Mobile number registered with SBI
  • Access to the registered mobile for receiving OTPs
  • SBI Internet Banking credentials if using the online method

Make sure your registered mobile number is active because several PIN generation and card-management services depend on OTP or SMS verification.

How to Activate SBI Debit Card Through Internet Banking

Customers with SBI Internet Banking can activate a newly issued debit card online.

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to SBI Internet Banking.
  2. Open the e-Services
  3. Select ATM Card Services.
  4. Choose New ATM Card Activation.
  5. Select the bank account linked with the new debit card.
  6. Enter the debit card number.
  7. Re-enter the debit card number for confirmation.
  8. Select Activate.
  9. Check the account and card details displayed on the screen.
  10. Select Confirm.
  11. A High Security Password or OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  12. Enter the received code and confirm the request.

After successful verification, the card activation request is completed. SBI also recognises an initial card transaction at an ATM or Point of Sale terminal as a way of activating a debit card.

SBI Debit Card PIN Generation Through an SBI ATM

One of the simplest ways to generate the PIN for a new SBI debit card is through the Green PIN facility available at SBI ATMs.

Visit an SBI ATM with your debit card and registered mobile number.

The ATM provides a PIN Generation/Green PIN service for creating a new PIN.

Generally, you will have to:

  1. Insert the SBI debit card into the ATM.
  2. Select PIN Generation or Green PIN.
  3. Enter the required account details when asked.
  4. Enter the mobile number registered with the bank.
  5. Confirm the information.
  6. SBI will send the required authentication information or OTP to your registered mobile number.
  7. Follow the ATM instructions to set a new four-digit debit card PIN.
  8. Re-enter the new PIN for confirmation.

Once successfully changed, the new four-digit number becomes your regular SBI ATM/debit card PIN.

Do not select an easily predictable PIN such as your birth year, repeated numbers such as 1111, or numbers directly related to your phone number.

SBI Green PIN Generation Through SMS

SBI also allows customers to initiate PIN generation by sending an SMS from their registered mobile number.

Type:

PIN CCCC AAAA

Here:

  • CCCC means the last four digits of your SBI debit card number.
  • AAAA means the last four digits of the bank account linked with the card.

Send the SMS to:

567676

For example, if the last four digits of the debit card are 4567 and the last four digits of the account are 9876, send:

PIN 4567 9876

SBI will send a One-Time PIN to the registered mobile number.

The OTP received through this process must then be used at an SBI ATM to create the permanent debit card PIN. SBI states that the OTP is valid for two days and recommends completing the process within 24 hours.

At the ATM:

  1. Insert the SBI debit card.
  2. Select the appropriate PIN-related option.
  3. Enter the temporary PIN/OTP received on the registered mobile.
  4. Choose the option to change the PIN.
  5. Enter a new four-digit PIN of your choice.
  6. Re-enter the new PIN to confirm it.

Your permanent debit card PIN will then be set.

SBI Debit Card PIN Generation Through Internet Banking

Customers who use SBI Internet Banking can also generate a debit card PIN online.

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to SBI Internet Banking.
  2. Select e-Services.
  3. Open ATM Card Services.
  4. Select ATM PIN Generation.
  5. Complete the required authentication.
  6. Select the account linked with the debit card.
  7. Select the required debit card.
  8. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen for creating the PIN.

Under SBI’s Internet Banking PIN-generation process, the customer creates part of the PIN while the remaining digits are communicated through the registered mobile number as part of the authentication process.

Follow the final instructions displayed by SBI to complete the PIN setup.

SBI Debit Card Green PIN Through Customer Care/IVR

SBI’s Contact Centre can also generate a One-Time PIN that can subsequently be converted into a permanent PIN at an SBI ATM.

Call:

1800 1234 or 1800 2100

Then follow these steps:

  1. Select your preferred language.
  2. Press 2 for ATM Card and Cheque Book services.
  3. Press 1 for ATM Card PIN Generation.
  4. Enter the last five digits of your SBI account number.
  5. Enter the last five digits of your debit card number.
  6. Enter your year of birth in YYYY format.
  7. Complete the verification.

After successful verification, SBI sends a One-Time PIN to the registered mobile number.

You must then visit an SBI ATM and use the One-Time PIN to generate your permanent debit card PIN.

How to Enable Online Transactions on an SBI Debit Card

A card may work at ATMs and physical shops but still be declined for online payments. This can happen because e-commerce transactions are not enabled on the card.

SBI allows customers to independently switch different debit card channels on or off.

Through SBI Internet Banking:

  1. Log in to SBI Internet Banking.
  2. Open e-Services.
  3. Select ATM Card Services.
  4. Choose ATM Card Limit/Channel/Usage Change.
  5. Select the account.
  6. Select the debit card.
  7. Choose the channel settings.
  8. Select the online/CNP or e-commerce transaction option.
  9. Choose Enable.
  10. Submit the request.

Customers can similarly control ATM, POS, domestic, international and NFC/contactless transactions.

How to Enable SBI Debit Card Transactions Through YONO SBI

SBI also provides debit card controls in the YONO SBI application.

After logging in:

  1. Open Service Request.
  2. Select ATM/Debit Card.
  3. Complete the required authentication.
  4. Open the debit card management section.
  5. Select the relevant bank account.
  6. Select the debit card.
  7. Open Manage Card or the available card-usage controls.
  8. Switch the required transaction facility ON.

Depending on your requirement, you can manage:

  • ATM transactions
  • POS transactions
  • E-commerce transactions
  • Domestic transactions
  • International transactions
  • Contactless/NFC transactions

Transaction limits can also be modified through the available debit card management options.

What Should You Do After Generating the SBI Debit Card PIN?

Once the permanent PIN has been created, it is useful to make a simple ATM or merchant transaction to confirm that the card is functioning correctly.

If you plan to use the card for online shopping, international payments or contactless transactions, check whether the respective channel is enabled instead of assuming that PIN generation automatically activates every facility.

Never share your debit card PIN, OTP, CVV, card expiry date, Internet Banking password or YONO credentials with another person. SBI specifically states that such information should not be shared even with someone claiming to be a bank employee.

What If SBI Debit Card PIN Generation Fails?

If the PIN cannot be generated, first check whether:

  • The debit card is linked with the correct account.
  • Your current mobile number is registered with SBI.
  • The card has not been blocked or temporarily disabled.
  • You are entering the correct account and card details.
  • The temporary Green PIN or OTP has not expired.

If the problem continues, contact SBI customer care or visit an SBI branch instead of repeatedly trying incorrect PIN combinations.

1. Can I generate an SBI debit card PIN without visiting an SBI branch?

Yes. SBI provides several self-service PIN generation options. You can initiate or generate the PIN through an SBI ATM, Internet Banking, SMS Green PIN or SBI Contact Centre. Some Green PIN methods generate a temporary PIN or OTP that must subsequently be converted into a permanent four-digit PIN at an SBI ATM.

2. Why is my new SBI debit card working at an ATM but not for online shopping?

Online or e-commerce transactions may not be enabled on the card. SBI issues new, renewed and replacement cards with selected domestic card-present facilities enabled, while channels such as e-commerce and international transactions can be controlled separately. You can enable online transactions through SBI Internet Banking, YONO SBI or other supported card-control channels.

3. How long is the SBI Green PIN received through SMS valid?

According to SBI’s Green PIN instructions, the OTP generated through the SMS facility is valid for two days, although SBI recommends using it within 24 hours. The OTP has to be used at an ATM to complete the permanent PIN generation process.

4. What should I do if I forget my SBI debit card PIN?

You do not have to continue guessing the old PIN. Generate or reset the debit card PIN using SBI’s available PIN-generation facilities such as an SBI ATM, Internet Banking or the Green PIN service. If you are unable to reset it through self-service channels, contact SBI customer care or visit your branch.
